Subject: 2009 SLB Thorbecke Award

Dear Dr. Blander:

On behalf of the 2009 SLB Awards Committee I want to congratulate you on winning the 2009 Thorbecke award!

The Thorbecke Award competition this year was extremely exciting. All the nominees are outstanding candidates, making the selection of a winner difficult, but rewarding, as the excellence in the nominees serve as fitting tribute to the memory of Dr. Thorbecke, just as intended when the award was created.

As you know, the Thorbecke award was created by the SLB to honor G. Jeanette Thorbecke, M. D., Ph.D., and Professor of Pathology at the New York University School of Medicine, who tragically died in a swimming accident in November 2001. She had gone to Hawaii at the invitation of the SLB to receive the 2001 Marie T. Bonazinga Award and to deliver the Bonazinga Lecture at the Cytokine Odyssey 2001 meeting. Being an avid swimmer, she went for a swim in the Pacific Ocean after the meeting was over, when she was stung by a Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish, which resulted in fatal complications. The award is intended for a deserving young female investigator working in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms of host defense and inflammation.

As part of the award you will have your registration and travel to the conference reimbursed by the society and receive a cash award.  You will also be announced and recognized at the Plenary Award Session on Sunday, October 18 in Lisbon (2:30 – 3:00 PM).

We would also like to include mention of the award in the conference program and request that you please submit a recent digital photo and brief (100 words) bio before August 30.

Congratulations again and thank you for your contribution to the Society for Leukocyte Biology.

Best regards,

John Lord
